Legendary Boston Bruins defenseman Ray Bourque is coming to Yarmouth next year.
NHL Alumni will be at Mariners Centre on April 7th for a charity hockey game, hosted by the Gary J. Surette Memorial Association.
Funds raised will go to the Gilles Boudreau and Friends Cancer Help Fund and the Lodge That Gives in Halifax.
Bourque is the all-time leader in points for NHL defensemen.
He says he loves visiting Atlantic Canada.
“Great hockey fans. You’ll hear if they’re cheering for Montreal, the Bruins or Toronto. Those normally are the three teams they love to talk about. Being a long-time Bruin, I know there are a lot of great Bruins fans out there.”
Other famous NHLers taking part will be former Montreal Canadiens’ Stephane Richer and Chris Nilan, and former Toronto Maple Leaf Al Iafrate, with more to be announced.
In the days following the event, there will be a four team tournament in memory of Surette.
A long time coach in Yarmouth minor hockey and avid Bruins fan, Surette passed away from skin cancer last December.
Bourque says alumni games give NHLers a chance to give back.
“A lot of people put on some great games and do it for special reasons. This is certainly one of them. We look forward to try and make a difference.”
Tickets for the alumni game go on sale this Thursday at the Mariners Centre box office.
