Dumping Day has been postponed until Tuesday.
That is for both LFA’s 33 and 34.
The decision was made this morning following conference calls with port reps, Environment Canada and DFO.
Dwayne Surette, Area Chief of Resource Management for DFO in Southwest Nova, says there is a protocol they follow.
“The synopsis was giving 25 to 30 (knot winds) and our protocol is anything over 26 will initiate a delay.”
Boats from LFA 34 will depart at 6am while the start time for LFA 33 is 7am.
The decision for LFA 33 was made yesterday morning and re-confirmed during this morning’s call.
Surette says Tuesday’s marine forecast is calling for 20-knot winds early in the morning and diminishing to light by afternoon
then picking up to 15 knots late Tuesday evening.
“All these decisions are based on safety concerns. We make our decisions for the weather but it’s for the safety of all fishermen.”
The lobster fishery in LFA 34 takes in all of Yarmouth County and parts of Digby and Shelburne counties.
LFA 33 encompasses part of Shelburne County, all of Queens and Lunenburg counties and part of Halifax County.
