As is often the case, Mother Nature is affecting the start of the commercial lobster season in South Western Nova Scotia.
Lobster fishermen in LFA 33 will not be heading out on the water Monday morning.
LFA 33 covers parts of Shelburne, all of Queens and Lunenburg counties and part of Halifax county.
No decision has been made yet for LFA 34.
The lobster fishery in LFA 34 takes in all of Yarmouth County and parts of Digby and Shelburne counties.
Port reps from both lobster fishing areas held a conference call with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Environment Canada this
morning on expected conditions for Monday.
Dwayne Surette, Area Chief of Resource Management for DFO in Southwest Nova says LFA 34 decided to postpone
the decision until tomorrow morning when they’ll take part in another conference call.
“Environment Canada was uncertain about the forecast. They had some models showing a slight possibility of diminishing winds
so they held off on their closure.”
Surette says port reps from LFA 33 decided to close on Monday.
“We’ll be having a conference call tomorrow (Sunday) morning to discuss the weather for Tuesday.”
He says conference calls are made to ensure the safety of all fishermen, based on weather forecasts, before a decision is made to open
the season.
