An initiative at hospitals in Southwestern Nova Scotia is expanding.
For years, experienced nurses have been wearing ASK ME buttons at Yarmouth Regional, Digby General and Roseway hospitals.
They were meant for new or recent graduates working at the hospitals who may still have questions.
The buttons are now being worn by other health professionals.
Nurse Manager Dana Andrews-Cunningham says they also want to incorporate patient families.
“Because a lot of times we see someone who may be lost in the hall, looking for a department and those sorts of things. We really want to promote, if you see someone, and you’re nervous about asking a question, someone with an ASK ME button is a good, safe person to approach and ask.”
To wear an ASK ME button, a health care provider must complete a preceptor training course.
Andrews-Cunningham says staff are excited about the button and seeking out opportunities to become qualified to wear one.
