He won the Bluenose Marathon in May, and took part in two Ironman competitions.
Hipson says he’s thankful for his family.
“My wife for putting up with all my training sessions, for the times I wasn’t at the table because I had a bike or training session. I’m very happy and very thankful to receive this award, and I’m proud to do it for Yarmouth.”
Hockey player Allie Munroe took Female Athlete of the Year.
Youth athletes of the year were Melissa Atkinson for hockey and Dennie d’Entremont in track and field.
Other award winners included Mark and Angela Nickerson as volunteers of the year, Brandon and Payton Doucette as fair play award winners, Aaron Sweeney and Kelley d’Entremont as coaches of the year and Alderic Boudreau as official of the year.
Teams that competed at Provincials or higher were honoured as well.
Jeff Gates played for ‘Sudden Impact’ at Slo-Pitch Nationals over the summer and coached the YCMHS Boys Senior Softball team that won D1 Provincials.
Gates says it’s nice to be recognized.
“I love softball, and to get it out there in the community with the young guys and guys my age, it’s a good feeling. On our men’s team the ages were 16 to 42.
