The RCMP say it’s is aware of a Facebook page in Yarmouth that posts photos and locations of members while performing their duties.
The closed group is called Y’Town Fine Interceptor.
It’s members are invited to post when they see police at checkpoint.
Nova Scotia RCMP spokesperson Jennifer Clarke says they feel like it is a positive thing.
“The RCMP is aware that people have Facebook pages, and everyone has the right to an opinion. We are pleased to see members of our community noticing our efforts to be pro-active and people should be interested in what we are doing. With regards to advising the public where police are, I would hope that people in the community are happy to know the police are out there doing their job. Police work with the community and vice versa, police want citizens to feel safe. If that means getting impaired drivers off the roads, or ticketing people for speeding or arresting someone for conducting illegal activity then that is what the focus should be. Everyone loses when police are prevented from doing their job because at the end of the day this is the community where we all live. “
Cpl Clarke says they are aware of people posting very negative and sometimes insulting comments.
“Again, people have the right to their opinion. If the RCMP are made aware of threats on Facebook or through any other forum towards our members, they will be investigated accordingly.”
The group’s founder says, on the page, that it was created to help people “avoid the hassle of dealing with the police around
Yarmouth County.
