The Nature Conservancy of Canada is disheartened that a sign erected at a nature reserve near Port Joli was intentionally damaged.
The sign was only erected a few weeks ago at Johnson’s Pond, a sanctuary for migratory birds including Piping Plovers.
Conservancy stewardship coordinator, Doug Van Hemessen says local volunteers work hard on these properties.
” And that’s the case with sign is that we had a local volunteers install it for us and it was that same volunteer who let me know this morning about the unfortunate incident.”
He says the sign appears to have been knocked down, possibly by a vehicle.
“There is a lot of time and work that goes into creating the sign and installing it. It didn’t taker a lot to undo all of that.”
Van Hemessen says many of their protected areas and reserves are in locations difficult for police to patrol and local residents are very helpful in keeping a watchful eye.
