If you’re at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship at Mariners Centre this week, you may notice many people wearing blue jackets.
Those blue jackets are on the many volunteers donating their time to the event.
In true Yarmouth fashion, more volunteers than originally forecast stepped up.
Jackie Normand moved to Yarmouth recently from Ontario, and just took up playing curling.
She’s been a general helper so far and a 50/50 ticket seller, and will help with set-up and tear down of Saturday night’s awards banquet at the Grand Hotel.
Normand says she’s excited to be a part of it.
“I’ve become involved with curling and I just thought it would be a fun way to support the community, get to know the fellow curlers and just be a part of something that’s neat for the Yarmouth community.”
17 year old Bailey Ross of Digby has been curling for nine years, and volunteered at the Canadian Senior Curling Championship at the Digby Arena in April.
He says he likes helping out at these events.
“I’ve volunteered at many events since I was young, and I thought I’d come down and help with this one as well. It’s exciting to see this level of curling in Nova Scotia.”
Host Committee Chair Rick Allwright says they put the call out for about 100 volunteers, but got 150.
The volunteers range in age from 13-78.
