Celebrities aren’t the only people who can inspire.
Second Story Women’s Centre is launching a mentorship program to match girls aged 9-13 with high school students and adults from their community.
The aim is to show girls they don’t need to look past their own backyards to find strong, successful women.
The program is the brainchild of Second Story’s Liz McCurdy.
She says including older teens as mentors is critical.
“Having high school students is important cause they’re closer to that younger age group and they understand a bit differently than we as adults do. They help bridge that gap.”
McCurdy is excited to bring the generations together.
“To gather together and learn from each other and connect. It’s also an opportunity for youth to have a greater support network in their community and fell like they’re supported by more adults.”
McCurdy says adult mentors get as much out of the exchange as the youth they are mentoring.
The group will meet regularly at Second Story Women’s centre when the program gets underway in late December.
McCurdy says she hopes to one day see the program expanded across the province.
