The general manager of the Mariners Centre says they are pulling out all the stops to make sure the Remembrance Day service will
be a memorable experience for everyone.
Gil Dares says while the service will be modified do to the upcoming curling championships, everything is being done to ensure the atmosphere is one of respect.
“For the first time ever we’ve removed the boards and glass in anticipation of the mixed curling so there’s going to be an unobstructed
view and probably a better sound from the floor because of that so the audience will be more involved the the service.
Dares says criticism of the Mariners Centre is misplaced.
“I take exception to anyone who thinks we would do anything disrespectful to veterans. My dad is a veterans, he was wounded overseas, my mom is a war bride. For anyone to think we would do anything disrespectful to the veterans or to the Legion is uncomprehensible to me.”
He says everyone has worked hard.
“We’ve ordered new flags for the flag poles. We’ll pull out all the stops to make sure the place is clean and shiny. I think everyone is going to enjoy the service. It’s modified a little bit but they’re also going to get an opportunity to see how we converted the arena for a national curling bonspiel.”
“I think the curling executive, the people on the curling committee, and the Legion have worked to come up with viable solutions to overcome the problems. I think people are going to enjoy the service and I don’t think it’s going to be that big of a change for them.”
“The important thing is that on November 11 please come and join us and show the respect that our veterans are due.”
