All levels of government are providing funding for the 2017 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships.
The six day event comes to Mariners Centre in Yarmouth on Sunday.
West Nova MP Colin Fraser was at the rink today to announce nearly $39,000 to support marketing activities for the host committee.
Fraser says this event is important to the area to promote it as a tourism destination.
“With sports events, we’ve seen how well they’ve done in the past and the amazing group of volunteers we’ve put together and the interest in sports in our community. I think this will be another event like that. I can’t wait for the curling to begin. As a curler myself, I take a pretty keen interest in it. It’s great to see the community rallying around it.”
Host Committee Chair Rick Allwright says a large number of people are coming to the event from across Canada.
The ice making process began yesterday to turn Arena 1 into five sheets of curling ice.
Allwright says preparations are well underway.
“Ice making is going along really quickly. The guys are loving the facility, and they are putting it together as quickly as possible.”
The province is providing $30,000, the Town of Yarmouth $15,000, and Argyle and Municipality of Yarmouth each $7,500.
The Canadian Curling Association is giving $2,000 and the Host Association is providing nearly $94,000 through event registrations, tickets and sponsorships.
