A new councillor in the Municipality of Shelburne has been selected as warden.
Penny Smith has worked within the municipality for nearly 25 years.
After acclaiming a position on council, she feels she can help lead them.
She says she looks forward to working with council.
“I have many ideas but the vision of the next four years will come from council as a whole and our community and I look forward to beginning that process.”
Smith received more votes than Norman Wallet to become the new warden.
David Levy was selected as the new deputy warden.
Both Smith and Levy will serve in the positions for two years.
Meanwhile, Rick Davis will be the deputy mayor in the Town of Shelburne.
The town rotates their deputy mayor every year meaning new councillors Harold Locke, Nolan Young and Sheldon Ringer will also have the opportunity to serve in the role.
Davis says he doesn’t feel any added pressure.
“It’s an added responsibility but normally the deputy mayor’s role is no different than a councillor unless the mayor is away or ill or something happens to the mayor.”
Davis says the new council is curious, ambitious and has fresh ideas.
He say the town has a lot on its plate including finding resolutions for the Farley Mowat vessel and decaying infrastructure.
