Yarmouth opened the scoring in the first on a goal by Connor Peveril, but trailed 2-1 in the second period.
A shorthanded goal by Matt Barron tied it at two and then Andrew Martell scored before the period was out to make it 3-2.
Messenger’s goal came in the third, but the Timberwolves would get it to 4-3 about halfway through the final frame.
The Mariners had to kill off a few late penalties, but skated out with the victory.
Head Coach and General Manager Laurie Barron says it was a great test for his hockey club.
“Playing a veteran club like that. We got a few pushes and we pushed back a little bit. I thought we were really good. Honestly, we missed some great chances tonight. I thought we took the game to them.”
The Amherst Ramblers visit Mariners Centre tomorrow night for a rare Sunday night showdown.
The Mariners already have three wins over the Rams this season.
Barron says his team will be ready.
“Three games in four days for us. We just have to play smartly, keep our shifts short and move the puck. Amherst is a great hockey club and we’re certainly not taking them lightly.”
Leif Hertz got the win in goal, making 27 saves.
Timberwolves goalie Tanner Somers faced 51 shots.
Yarmouth remained two points ahead of Pictou for first in the Eastlink South Division, and moved four points ahead of Miramichi.
