You may want to re-think taking that call if you’re driving in Lunenburg County.
RCMP have begun an education and enforcement campaign around distracted driving.
Plainclothes officers stood at intersections in Mahone Bay and Lunenburg Wednesday, watching for drivers failing to stop at stop signs or yielding to pedestrians, not wearing seatbelts or talking on cell phones.
Staff Sergeant Steve MacQueen with Lunenburg County RCMP says they are responding to the public’s concerns.
“We hear over and over again that one of the issues that they see in their communities is people not obeying the rules of the road.”
MacQueen says they watched 600 vehicles in Lunenburg and Mahone Bay on Wednesday.
He was pleasantly surprised how few people they saw driving distracted.
“The majority of people are driving safely. They are wearing their seatbelts, they don’t have their phones, they are stopping at stop signs. So it’s the minority [of] drivers that are breaking the rules and that’s who we are trying to change their behaviours.”
Nine drivers were ticketed for distracted driving.
McQueen says RCMP will continue conducting weekly checks throughout Lunenburg County.
@RCMPNS #NScarchat And finally: winter, spring, summer or fall – put your phone down and don’t text and drive.
