An organizer of the annual Spirit Water Walk at Acadia First Nations in Yarmouth says it’s important to recognize that our water is sacred.
Marilyn Francis says water needs to be protected.
That’s why she started this walk four years ago, to draw attention and give thanks to the water.
“It’s all about the spirit of our water. Our water is sacred. We need to protect it. Without our water we wouldn’t survive.”
This year’s water walk takes place on Saturday at 1pm, beginning at the Acadia First Nations Health Centre.
“We walk to the Killiams Wharf. We do our prayers and we drum and we sing and we give thanks to the water.”
Francis says there will also be a smudging ceremony.
There will be a feast after the walk.
Francis says everyone is welcome to attend, and to make sure to dress for the conditions.
