The MP for South Shore – St. Margaret’s says she is over the moon after her motion addressing abandoned and derelict vessels passed unanimously.
Members of parliament voted 311-0 in favour of turning M-40 into legislation.
The federal department of transportation has six months to do that.
The motion proposes the government explore options prohibiting the abandonment of a vessel, help communities remove them and an educational component on responsible ownership.
The Town and Port Authority in Shelburne have been trying to get rid of the Farley Mowat vessel since the fall of 2014.
Jordan hopes the new law will finally bring closure.
“They need help. That’s the key. The part of the motion that I think is that they can say ‘this is an economic burden for us, where you can maybe help us get rid of it.’ And, that’s what we’re going to be pushing for Shelburne. That’s what we’re going to be pushing for the Farley Mowat.”
She says receiving all-party support sends a strong signal to the government that something has to be done on this issue.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Shelburne says she and her council are pleased with the vote.
Karen Mattatall says Shelburne was one of the driving forces behind that motion.
“Regarding the fact that we’ve had a derelict vessel sitting in our harbour for two years. It’s very exciting.”
Mattatall says she will be watching closely to ensure the Liberal government moves forward.
