The president of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union says she feels confident that a strike vote will pass.
Public school teachers have until 8 p.m to vote after rejecting two tentative deals with the province earlier this month and last November.
Liette Doucet says she’s expecting a strong mandate.
“I obviously can’t predict what the mandate will be, what the percentage will be. However, I’m expecting it to be a significant percentage.”
Doucet says the strike vote was called to protect public education and learning and teaching conditions.
She says despite today’s vote, they will try to avoid a strike.
“Nobody wants to be on strike. Teachers want to be in front of their classroom; they want to be helping their students; they want to be making sure their students are successful.”
The province’s education minister has said the Nova Scotia government plans to wait for the vote results before deciding next steps.
The NSTU says results will be available around 8:45 p.m.
