Many parts of the Tr-Counties got a little taste of winter this morning.
Some areas got hail while other communities had a mix of rain and snow.
While many of us may not want to think about what’s to come, the folks at Nova Scotia’s Department of Transportation
are ready.
Don Houston, operations supervisor with the department’s Yarmouth office says staff have been working on gear in
preparation for winter weather since the first of September.
“That includes working on plows, wings, making sure salt computers are ready, pretty much ramping up for that winter activity”
Houston says salt, dirt and brine holding facilities have been topped up.
“We’ve got brine in place, we’re ready for the liquid applications if needed. The salt domes have been filled up since the first of September, four thousand tonnes.”
“We’ve been doing job interviews, we interviewed nine guys the other day.”
He says last year they used 4-thousand tonnes of salt. Provincially 183 thousand tonnes was spread.
