Another Lunenburg landmark is back in port.
Picton Castle is in dry dock for it’s bi-annual upkeep.
Barnacles will be cleared, systems will be checked and the hull will be painted.
Helping with the work are the students of the Bosun’s school.

Chief Operations Officer Maggie Ostler says on Picton Castle, they began to notice sailors they would look at hiring didn’t have the neccessary skills.
In 2008 the Bosun’s school was established to give people those skills.
“A lot of what the learn is really hands on. So, we’ll do lectures and workshops to introduce them to concepts. Captain Moreland likes to say, practice makes permanent,” says Ostler.
“By doing it again and again you build a muscle memory of how to do these skills. So at some point down the road when these young mariners are on other ships and they’re called on to repair a service, they’ll know how to do it.”
Ostler says once they’ve completed the course some students find work on Picton Castle while others move on to more commercial vessels.
She says students come from all over the world to attend the three month course which wraps up in December.
