This week is National School Bus Safety Week.
The Tri-County Regional School Board continues to keep track of school bus red light violations
The number of violations remains discouraging.
As of last March, numbers were up over 30 per cent from the previous year.
Board Director of Operations Steve Stoddart says it’s crucial to the get the numbers out.
“We want to make the public aware of what’s taking place, and to keep on top of it. I would say it’s one of the most dangerous things going on in the school community right now.”
Stoddart will have the complete report for 2015-2016 at the November board meeting.
He urges those who see a violation to report it to police.
In Nova Scotia, a first offence under the Motor Vehicle Act for driving past a stopped school bus carries a $410 fine and six demerit points on the driver’s licence.
The fines increase with each offence.
Drivers can also be charged for passing a bus with its amber warning lights flashing.
