The Yarmouth Junior A Mariners keep finding ways to win.
This time they needed a five-round shootout to get their 11th straight win, 2-1 over the Valley Wildcats tonight at Mariners Centre.
Mike Snow scored the shootout winner and goaltender Leif Hertz stopped all five shooters he faced.
Hertz was also brilliant in overtime, making an incredible glove save on Grant Janes to deny the Wildcats a win.
Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says Hertz is a special player.
“Leif Hertz is a big part of our hockey club. A real veteran, who throws his body at any puck and gives us a chance to win. He’s a big reason we got to the shootout.”
Valley’s Justin Ritcey was named first star of the game, he made 48 saves.
Barron says Ritcey deserved that honour.
“Ritcey was a very deserving first star. That was a win that felt a bit like a loss. Not taking anything away from Valley, but I thought we were a bit soft, didn’t play as tough or as physical as we have in the past.”
Connor Peveril had the goal for the Mariners in regulation and Jean-Marc Evans-Renaud scored for Valley to tie it in the third. Both were powerplay goals.
The Mariners wore pink jerseys for the first time, they will auction them off at the end of the month for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
