As summer fades, thoughts of ticks become a distant memory.
That’s a mistake according the Nova Scotia representative of CanLyme, Donna Lugar.
Lugar says awareness of ticks and lyme disease is strong in the warmer months but people become less vigilant as the weather cools off.
She says people need to know that ticks are everywhere and they need to be prepared when they go outside.
“Certainly after this rain and wind they’ll be people cleaning up some leaves and things. And you just have to be aware that they could be there. It’s not just the woods anymore. They’re being found in people’s yards.”
Lugar says ticks are active as long as temperatures are above 4 degrees
“I’m getting calls all year. People that have been out getting their Christmas tree have gotten ticks on them. It’s an all year thing.”
Lugar says you should always perform a tick check when going inside.
She says tucking pants into socks and wearing rubber boots outside can help prevent a tick bite.
