Fire Prevention Week takes place from October 9 to October 15.
The theme for this year is: Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.
According to statistics, working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half.
Stewart Deveau, a Fire Prevention Officer with the Yarmouth Fire Department, says they will be making
presentations in elementary schools during Fire Prevention Week.
“I always say: I give you homework to go home and look for hazards with your parents and grandparents. I’ve had parents come to me afterwards and say “little Johnny made me unplug the toaster.” They are very attentive.”
“Fire Prevention Week is one a year but we preach fire prevention year ’round. We attend the schools and speak to elementary students about fire safety. We have a display at the Yarmouth Mall.”
In Yarmouth Fire Prevention Week always kicks off with the Torchlight Parade.
It starts this Friday at 8pm from the corner of Main and Argylethen proceeding north on Main to Porter and up to the Yarmouth Fire Station for an
open house and refreshments.
