Five awards are being presented this year for Excellence in Community Development, Hospitality, Innovation in Business,
Exporter of the Year and Business of the Year. Three finalists have been selected in each of the categories.
In a news release, Dixie Redmond, Executive Director of the Community Business Development Corporation-Shelburne (CBDC),
one of the sponsors for the awards, said “We had 49 nominations in five categories that came from throughout Shelburne County.”
“We were very pleased to see the response from the public this year,” said Redmond. “It was great to see the level of interest from
the community. All of the nominations we received were excellent candidates. It was hard to choose only three finalists.
Everyone is a winner and we thank you for your valuable contributions to our communities”
The finalists for the Excellence in Community Development Award in alphabetical order are:
the Black Loyalist Heritage Society, Birchtown, the Hillcrest Academy Community Playground Society, Shelburne,
and the Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund Society, Barrington Passage.
For the Hospitality Award the finalists are :
Mama’s by the Sea, Clark’s Harbour, Sandy Point Lighthouse and Community Centre Recreation Group, Sandy Point,
and Shelburne Harbour Boat Tours, Shelburne.
The three finalists for the Innovation in Business Award are Allendale Technologies Ltd., Lockeport, Cooke’s Aquaculture Inc.,
Shelburne, and Kenney & Ross Ltd., Port Saxon.
For the Exporter of the Year Award, the finalists are: I. Deveau Fisheries Ltd., North East Point, Sea Star Seafoods Ltd.,
Clark’s Harbour and Ven-Rez Products, Sandy Point.
The three finalists for the Business of the Year Award are the Boxing Rock Brewing Company, Shelburne, Lou Acker Machining & Repairs Inc., Shelburne, and Wilsons Shopping Centre Ltd., Barrington Passage.
The award winners will be announced at a gala banquet on Thursday, October 20 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Clark’s Harbour
starting at 6 p.m.
Guest speaker for the banquet is Shelburne County’s own Neville MacKay, co-owner of My Mother’s Bloomers Floral & Gift Shop in Halifax.
