Premier Stephen McNeil, says Nova Scotia is a leader in reducing greenhouse gasses in this country.
The premier was responding to questions about a proposed plan out of Ottawa to mandate either a cap and trade or carbon pricing system across the country.
McNeil says he wants the feds to recognize the work Nova Scotia has done.
“We have continued to work with our citizens, with our ratepayers with homeowners, to find ways to reduce our energy consumption and it’s paying off.”
McNeil says the province has already invested heavily in clean energy and feels a blanket federal policy would disrupt those efforts.
“My advice to the federal government and to other provinces is, what is your objective? And that is to reduce your GHGs and no other province in Canada has done a better job of it than Nova Scotia.”
McNeil believes Nova Scotia’s investments in renewable energies is comparable to what the government is proposing to do to reduce greenhouse gasses.
He says forcing a cap and trade or carbon pricing on Nova Scotians is unnecessary and he prefers a “made in Nova Scotia” solution to reducing greenhouse gasses.
