A battle royale is shaping up between North America and the EU over lobster
Recently the scientific arm of the European Union said there is enough evidence to support a review of Sweden’s request to declare the American lobster an invasive species.
The Lobster Council of Canada is part North America’s action plan.
The council’s executive director, Geoff Irvine, says they have a really good Canadian team lead by Global Affairs Canada, DFO International, the provinces and the Fisheries Council of Canada.
“And we also have the Americans, the National Fisheries Institute. the Maine Lobster Dealers Association, they are all working together as well. They have their national effort and we have ours, but it’s very much a North American team effort.”
The U-S and Canada argue that Sweden’s attempt to protect the European lobster from its larger American cousin, which has been found in small numbers in North Atlantic waters, lacks any scientific evidence of a pending invasion.
