The issue of whether to allow burning in small fire pits in the Town of Yarmouth will be further examined.
Town staff will provide recommendations to amend the Fire Prevention By-law to include small, self-contained fires and the implications thereof.
Currently, those living in town cannot have a wood burning fire in their yard.
Mayor Pam Mood says many town residents want to see this change.
“We’re trying to take the steps to see what will that look like. Not a done deal yet but we’re certainly working towards that.”
Mood says there will be a lot of things to consider.
“You are in town, you have neighbours. A lot of people are allergic to smoke. Of course this time of year it’s so dry and the last thing you want to
have is a fire”
Mayor Mood says Yarmouth Fire Chief John Verrall will be consulted on the issue.
A number of people from the Facebook group ‘Family backyard fires in the Town of Yarmouth’ were in attendance at last night’s regular council meeting.
