The Canadian Association of Optometrists says only 21 per cent of parents in Atlantic Canada chose vision health as one of their top three health concerns.
Dr. France Muise says one in every four children has vision problems.
She says with children heading back to school, now is the time to have their eyes checked.
“A lot of parents and teachers are under the impression that they would be able to pick up if a kid had a vision problem. Unfortunately, we know that it is not the case.”
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends infants have their first eye exam between six and nine months, another between ages two and five, and annually once they begin school.
Muise says eye exams are not only important for ensuring children have the visual skills necessary for learning and development, they are also key to overall health maintenance.
