A Yarmouth County veteran has been presented with the French Legion of Honour.
Bernard Smith, a 94 year old World War II veteran is the fourth member of the Wedgeport Legion to receive the honour.
It was presented to Smith by West Nova MP Colin Fraser in front of a large crowd at the legion.
Smith was just 19 years old when he enlisted in the Canadian Army as a soldier in the service division.
He was there on D-Day in 1944.
Legion President Jerry MacKenzie says Smith is an amazing person.
“And his story that he told us about all that he went through was just something else. He would say I’m not sure I’m deserving of this, but he certainly is, when you listen to his whole story.”
Fraser says it’s important to remember the sacrifices made for our country.
“But also to thank and honour the people that are still living in our communities and contributing to our countries, and Mr. Smith is a great example of that.”
Alcide LeBlanc, Wesley Spinney and Vernon Doucette are the other Wedgeport Legion members to receive the honour.
