A member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Wedgeport will receive the French Legion of Honour next week. 94 year old Bernard Fielding Smith of Yarmouth fought for the liberation of Europe during the Second World War, and was there on D-Day in 1944. He was a Canadian Army soldier in the service division, and enlisted when he was just 19 years old. He found himself overseas just three weeks later. Smith says he went ashore the day after D-Day after being out at sea. “There was no shooting when I went ashore. I did get shrapnel in the tire of my truck. It wasn’t too bad when I went ashore but I had a good view of what went on.” Smith says he was surprised to learn he’d be receiving the award. “I know there are a lot of others that did something more deserving, but I’m very happy to receive it.” The ceremony will be held at the Wedgeport Legion on August 31 at 11am. Smith is the fourth member of Branch 155 to receive the honour, after Alcide LeBlanc, Wesley Spinney and Vernon Doucette.
