WE RAISED FUNDS FOR:

A Ventilator for Respiratory Services

3 Nitrous Oxide Delivery Systems for the Maternal Child Department

And 3 Portable Non-invasive blood pressure monitors for the Maternal Child Department.

FIRST GOAL:  1 PB980 ventilator for Respiratory Services  at a cost of $56,043.

The new ventilator is a breathing machine that helps ventilated patients breathe more naturally

and minimizes their work of breathing. It will replace an 11-year-old machine.

This ventilator allows patients to be more comfortable while ventilated, which can lead to less sedation and earlier removal of the breathing tube.

This ventilator also has the option to ventilate not only adults but infants and children as well, using their Neonatal mode. The PB840 has upgraded technology over our other ventilators, and will be a welcome addition to our department, says Natalie Bourque, Manager of Rehabilitation Services, Respiratory Services.

Respiratory Services is a regional program offered only at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Neither Roseway Hospital nor Digby General has a regular Respiratory Service.

SECOND GOAL:  3 Nitrous Oxide Delivery Systems for a total cost of $27,689 for the Maternal Child Department.

Nitrous oxide is a medical drug approach to pain management during labor. Sometimes called laughing gas, it’s a mixture of nitrous oxide, N2O, and oxygen and is used commonly in dental procedures around the world.Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask and helps to manage pain throughout the whole body without causing a total loss of feeling or any loss of muscle movement.

Access to nitrous oxide can provide more pain management options for women who do not have access to an epidural or who do not want an epidural. It can be administered and adjusted by the patient.

It’s less invasive than using an epidural or injectable opioids and provides a similar level of pain relief as an injectable opioid, but it doesn’t carry those side effects for the newborn that you see with injectable opioid drugs.

Nitrous oxide can be used during all stages of labor, even after the birth, For example, if you’re having a perineal tear repaired, you could use nitrous oxide during that time.

Additionally it can ease a patient’s anxiety.

THIRD AND FINAL GOAL: 3 Portable Non-invasive blood pressure — NIBP for short — monitors for a total cost of $11,768.00 for the Maternal Child Department

These monitors come with an easy-to-use, vivid touchscreen display and provide accurate vital signs measurement including blood pressure averaging, spot checking, interval monitoring and custom scoring across patient populations. They do blood pressures, heart rate, and estimate of the amount of oxygen in the blood — all within an average of 15 seconds.

They are highly efficient and widely used hundreds of times per day to assist nursing and other health professionals in the management of patients.

The Yarmouth Regional Hospital’s Maternal Child Department is a regional service serving Digby, Shelburne and Yarmouth Counties.
