The landscape along Yarmouth’s north Water Street has changed drastically.
Crews have demolished and removed a large middle section of the former DomTex cotton mill building.
It’s owned by the Yarmouth and Area Industrial Commission which is comprised of the Town of Yarmouth and the Municipalities of Yarmouth and Argyle.
Deputy Mayor Phil Mooney says with winter weather, work has slowed down somewhat.
“Right now you can see they’ve compacted some of the gravel and some of t he mixtures there. They’re going to wait for this Spring and go in and re-compact it again.”
Mooney says It’s a valuable asset in helping to attract new business.
He says one thing you don’t see much of is a large, open piece of land on Water Street.
“People are interested in it and they’ve been contacting the Industrial Commission and so hopefully, with the one land-owner adjacent there, who is interested in doing an expansion and the other open possibilities there, that somebody will come in and see something that they want to do and set up a business in the town of Yarmouth.”
That section of the former cotton mill had deteriorated over the years and there were leaks, mould and issues with the electrical system.
Seven years ago, repairs were estimated to have cost around $7 million dollars, so it was decided tearing it down was the best option.
That contract was awarded to Dexter Construction for $3.1 million.
