A program that allows children aged 6-10 to try hockey is in danger of leaving Yarmouth.
The First Shift is a partnership between Canadian Tire and the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association that allows kids who haven’t played the game before to try it at a discounted price.
So far this season, registration has been low, and it needs to be up by Friday, or the area could lose the program.
YCMHA President Ian White says the First Shift has meant a lot since it arrived in Yarmouth two years ago.
“You get your child equipped and on the ice with the Yarmouth Mariners for nine sessions to see if they like the game. If they do, we have a great discount rate to join minor hockey for the rest of the year.”
White says he’s seen many success stories through the program.
“We’ve got rave reviews from participants and families. A number of kids have joined and stayed in minor hockey since, with some becoming valuable skaters and goaltenders. The main thing is, we hope they’re having a great time.”

White says they are hoping to start the program in early October.
