MP clarifys governments position on Cat ferry in light of yesterdays federal budget.

Friday, March 5th 2010

The M-P for West Nova is clarifying the government's position on ferry service in Yarmouth in light of yesterday's federal budget. Yesterday Defence Minister Peter Mackay said a flat-no-when asked on CTV whether the federal government would fund the Cat ferry. Greg Kerr tells CJLS News that  Mackay was referring to a recent offer made to the province by four municipal units in western Nova Scotia. That offer, rejected flatly by the province contained 2.5 million dollars from the federal government that the municipalities could have used had the province accepted the offer. "I think Peter's reference and I didn't hear his comments, but, is that it's not the federal governments to move in where the province walked out. "Our role, we felt, was to try and work with them and work with the locals to try and come up with a resolution but the main party has said they're not interested and the're not going to do it and that's the provincial government."  Kerr said MacKay's reference to money for the Digby-Saint John ferry was regarding previously announced money.
