NS Finance Minister Graham Steele says province won't revisit Cat decision.

Monday, February 22nd 2010

Nova Scotia Finance Minister Graham Steele repeated the province's decision not to fund the Cat Ferry. Steele, in Yarmouth Friday night for a public session on reducing the province's deficit, said the NDP would not revisit that decision. Steele did meet for about 20 minutes with a group of laid-off Bay Ferries employees who attended the session at the NSCC Burridge Campus. Bay Ferries employee Ken Winters told CJLS News the minister had nothing new to say. Steele invited Winters to speak at the conclusion of the public session. Here's what he had to say. "..with the sudden ending of the funding for the (Cat) ferry it has not given us a chance to sustain any kind of a tourism industry at this end of the province until hopefully a viable alternative, whatever that may be, is found for the year 2011". "I don't understand the government's rationale for not carrying over the service for one more year, as opposed to what they've done which is shock the system." "I'm not an economist and I'm certainly not a politician, but I fail to understand the rationale for not giving us a sustainable and viable transition to whatever the ACOA report gives us for the long term viability that is in its options, thank you ." Graham Steele told CJLS News that just because the province won't fund the Cat ferry doesn't mean that Yarmouth will never have a ferry again.
