Municipality of Yarmouth votes to increase fur farm setbacks.

Thursday, October 29th 2009

The municipality of Yarmouth will make a by-law amendment to increase the set-back distance for mink, fox, hog and fowl operations. The council voted 5 to 2 in favour of increasing the set-back from watercourses to 500 feet–from the existing 328 feet. Councillors Rick Churchill and Leland Anthony, who is also the warden, voted against the increase. Warden Anthony says the setback of 500 feet seemed like an arbitrary number. He says there were no hard facts to support a 500 foot setback.  The majority of people who spoke at a recent public hearing wanted an increase in the set-back to address concerns about contamination in the Carleton watershed.
