A provincewide ban on all open fires begins today.

Thursday, July 12th 2012

Jim Rudderham, supervisor of wildfire management with the Department of Natural Resources, says "the dry and warm weather we are experiencing has brought the fire weather index to high or extreme throughout the province."

"A ban on open fires will reduce the risk of wildfires and potential damage to homes and properties."

The open-fire ban will continue until further notice.

The ban prohibits open fires within 305 metres of wooded areas, including in devices such as chimeneas.

Municipalities may have additional restriction on open fires.
