A Yarmouth high school student recently received a rare honour.
Grade 12 YCMHS student Brad Jones was given at Schulich Leader Scholarship in Engineering at Dalhousie University.
Valued at $100,000, it’s one of the largest scholarships given out in Canada.
It’s also the first time a student from Yarmouth has been selected.
Jones is one of 25 students from across the country to receive the scholarship.
He says it was shocking news.
“I had no idea I was even going to come close to winning the award, especially at Dalhousie which had a lot of applicants. I was really surprised when I got the call.”
Launched in 2012, this $100 million program funds 50 undergraduate scholarships each year, across top Canadian universities.
Jones explains how the selection process works.
“You can pick up to three schools to apply to. Each school goes through their list of applicants, and they choose the best applicant that they have to give the scholarship to.”
Jones not only excels academically, he plays baseball at a high level, and was captain of the Yarmouth Vikings hockey team this year.
He says he’ll try out for the baseball team at Dalhousie next year, but his major focus will be on his studies.
